Medical Informatics (Bachelor)

For years the impact of information technology is rising in the medical domain. Digitization in nearly all areas of life speeds up this process and increases further the need for experts in medical informatics. Examples:

  • Computer-aided Diagnosis, e.g. with the help of image analysis and machine learning
  • Software development for medical technology
  • Computer-based modelling of clinical processes, e.g. for documentation and accounting
  • Deal with different interfaces of heterogeneous computer systems used in hospitals

This degree program – unique in Bavaria – is offered by the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg (Technical university of Applied Sciences) in close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of Regensburg University and the University Hospital Regensburg. The degree program is designed to provide practice-based well-founded education in informatics with large parts of programming and mathematics, as well as classic topics like data bases and communication systems.

At the same time you become familiar with special knowledge of the medical area like terminology, methods and business environment and regulatory framework.
You get to know the typical procedures applied in hospitals and integrated supply structures. You will get first-hand experience how modern information technology is used in the interest of the patient’s well-being and the optimal use of resources. And you will participate in application development teams of small-scale projects as part of the degree program.

Especially the interface between informatics and medicine offers fascinating challenges. In Regensburg, the entire field of medical informatics is taught with focus on "Medical Image Computing", "eHealth" and "Software development for medical engineering"

As a graduate you may have excellent career prospects. Medical informatics experts work not only in health care facilities, but in software development companies with applications for medical technology and for hospital information systems, one of Germans top-selling industry. Because of being expert not only in medical informatics but in informatics in general, you will be employable outside the area of medicine and the health care sector as well.

The Master's program "Computer Science" of the OTH Regensburg offers a special focus on medical informatics. Therefore, when you have gained your B.Sc., why not go on to study for a Master’s degree in Computer Science in Regensburg – the choice is yours!

The decision to study for a B.Sc. in Medical Informatics is one you will not regret!
